Show Title
Broadway Fantasies
Repertoire
For their third season, The Sages will perform "Broadway Fantasies", a production that blends the styles and patterns of Broadway musicals into one dreamlike fantasy. The show depicts a musical that does not exist -- but does it matter if it's real?

The Sages announce themselves with "Sunday" by Stephen Sondheim, a classic show tune that starts quiet and ends triumphantly. The opener concludes with Bjork's nostalgic "It's Oh So Quiet," an energetic and unusual song that parodies well known Broadway tropes.

The brass takes a break with "The Dance" by Kurt Elling, a percussive and happy jazz piece, while the drumline and pit show off to the crowd. But the brass returns in "A Weekend in the Country," another Sondheim tune that rolls along on fast triplet rhythms and leads the opener to a sudden, inspiring end.

The ballad shifts the attention away from classic, jazzy Broadway. The corps performs an excerpt of Ennio Morricone's somber piece "Poverty" before beginning Chris Remo's song "Ol' Shoshone," an acoustic tune that will remind the audience of Broadway's many Westerns. The ballad rises in volume and ends on a riotous note.

The corps quickly changes attitude with Sondheim's "Do I Hear a Waltz?" Classic Broadway sneaks back into the show, quietly and distantly at first -- then all at once. As pace rises and the color guard performs a breathtaking dance routine, the musicians gather at the front of the field and play one final, powerful chord, ending on a typical Broadway stinger.

After the cutoff, a downtrodden trumpet plays in the background, echoing in the stadium. The corps turns to look, and the guard freezes in place. The lone trumpet fades until it cannot be heard. The musical does not exist. The show never ends. No hay banda.
