Tides of Time
Repertoire
Tides of Time is a spectacular, completely original five-movement marching band production that maps the intricate progression, stillness, and eventual fracture of time through a continuous symphonic narrative. The show opens with Movement I: The Primordial Pendulum (The Dawn of Order), a dark and driving introduction set in D Minor ($4/4$ time, $\mathit{J}=144$) driven by a heavy, mechanical marching percussion pulse and sharp low brass chords that mimic the grinding gears of ancient timekeeping devices. This mechanical rigidity builds tension until it breaks into Movement II: Rapid Transit (The Velocity of Progress), a high-octane woodwind and brass feature in G Minor ($7/8$ asymmetrical meter, $\mathit{J}=160$) that captures the dizzying speed of modern life through swift sixteenth-note runs and frantic syncopation across the field. The chaos suddenly dissolves into the serene, peaceful atmosphere of Movement III: The Oasis of the Present (Stillness in the Sand), a gorgeous, fluid ballad written in E-flat Major ($3/4$ waltz time, $\mathit{J}=76$) featuring a lyrical duet between a solo flute and solo horn supported by a shimmering, cascading canopy of mallet percussion that evokes the imagery of sand flowing gracefully through an hourglass. The timeline begins to destabilize in Movement IV: Chrono-Friction (The Fragmented Hour), a highly erratic, syncopated movement in C Minor ($6/8$ meter, $\mathit{J}=132$) that splits the ensemble into separate instrument sections exchanging aggressive musical call-and-response patterns to represent a ticking clock breaking down. Finally, the show reaches its absolute artistic and technical peak in Movement V: Cosmic Convergence (The Infinite Loop), a relentless finale that rapidly modulates between C Minor and G Major while forcing the entire ensemble through complex polyrhythms and rapid-fire subdivisions over an intensive $12/8$ groove ($\mathit{J}=168$), building an athletic wall of sound that culminates in a sudden, massive unison impact to freeze the field in time.
