In 1917, in order to get Mexico on the German side of WWI, German foreign secretary Arthur Zimmermann dispatched a coded message to Heinrich von Eckardt, German ambassador to Mexico.
It was asking Mexico to invade the U.S.
The aftermath would have been very bloody, but luckily Mexico declined and Britain intercepted it.
